Abstract:
This chapter responds to some of the challenges presented by the South African anthropologist, Patty Henderson in relation to the (re)conceptualisations of childhood. Henderson describes a situation that is common in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa where the effects of orphaning due to HIV & AIDS, poverty, social inequalities, unequal distribution of resources in schools and communities are ever present in the lives of children. In exploring Henderson's ideas on the reconceptualisations of childhood in the age of AIDS, the chapter focuses on visual images of childhood.
