dc.description.abstract The following is a critical review of South African Journal of Higher Education (19), special themed issue of 2005, and addresses the changing context of higher education in South Africa. The review examines a selection of the published papers in the journal which take stock of the higher education context in Africa. The review highlights some of the key themes in the papers, their strengths and weaknesses, and suggests that a significant limitation of the edition is the scant attention paid to gender, sexuality and culture (critical issues pertinent to the development of an African university). en
