The world paper famine and the South African press 1938-1955

Abstract

This article illustrates two major points: first , the large degree to which every aspect of newspapers production was governed, at base, by the economic context, decisions and strategies encountered and employed by newspaper companies; and secondly, the heightened regulation and control of the industry instituted as a direct result of the conditions and requirements of the paper shortage. In every case, the world paper famine, had a critical impact on the development and structure of the South African newspaper industry.
