Abstract:
The aim of this chapter is to acknowledge that while there are success stories about saving lives and innovating healthcare systems. The struggle against HIV and AIDS has partly been shaped by the quest for sophisticated and adapted treatments in a context where several aspects of HIV treatment remain largely dependent on the intervention and innovation agenda of the west for funding, licensing of patented components, and standards that are mostly set according to the guidelines of western countries. These aspects are likely to undermine the flexibility of local scientists.
