Limpopo???s economy is heavily dependent on mining, and is therefore highly vulnerable to internal and external shocks that can affect mining sector production. Being the most significant economic player in the area, Anglo-American Platinum (AAP) is conscious of the negative effects that a likely decline in mining operations in Limpopo, could mean for the province's unemployment and poverty. That is why it commissioned a study of the Limpopo Provincial Strategy for Resilient Sustainable Development, in order to articulate the key challenges, opportunities and priorities for making the province ready for a transition to a sustainable post-mining economy. That study was carried out by Dobbin International and its 2016 report painted an alarming picture of the possible economic deterioration that could befall the province if the mines were to close. The HSRC was then subcontracted to do a social impact study and this study must shed light on social factors affecting the capability of target communities to make this intervention successful and beneficial. The social impact study that HSRC undertook is therefore an integral component of the feasibility of the proposed immediate intervention in line with the long-term vision of structural transformation of the provincial economy. |
