dc.description.abstract South Africa has 26 public universities which enrol about 1 million students (2015) and over 120 typically small private HEIs that cater for about 150,000 students. In addition, occupation-focused HE is also provided by a subset of public technical and vocational education and training (TVET) colleges and private providers. Overall, the HE system in South Africa has been growing every year, particularly the number of contact students. South Africa now has one of the most massified HE systems in Africa with a GER of just under 20% (DHET, 2017). en
