dc.description.abstract |
Policy-makers increasingly recognise the importance of vaccines in contending with global health challenges and improving people's living conditions, particularly the poor and vulnerable. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of vaccine research for the continuity and welfare of society. The growing global
demand for vaccine research emphasises the need for strengthened vaccine research and development (R&D) capacities in emerging countries (Homma et al. 2013). As Rappuoli et al. (2011) discuss, healthcare is perhaps the most important factor driving one's quality of life in society. Vaccines play a central role in eliminating
childhood diseases, increasing longevity and generally protecting people's health. Furthermore, as these authors state, technology and innovations are essential for identifying medical solutions to address the challenges of the 21st century related to new infections and the vulnerabilities related to poverty. |
