Abstract:
Many of the articles in this edition of the HSRC Review relate to challenges in the labour market but are also about innovative ways in which young Africans earn their livelihoods, often in difficult, unequal and precarious circumstances. The HSRC recently launched the 2023 Agrarian Rural Household Economy report, which profiles the lives of those who earn a living from agriculture in South Africa. Researchers surveyed 1,297 households
from 12 districts across all nine provinces of South Africa, and the data also revealed heightened vulnerability among women-headed households. We also report on the HSRC’s latest South African Agricultural Business Innovation Survey (2019–2021), which indicates the remarkable resilience of our agricultural businesses, despite global disruptions such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
