Abstract:
This session was centered on the frequent re-emergence of military coups in Mali, Sudan, Burkina Faso, and Guinea. It is important to highlight that in a period of just 16 months, between August 2020 and February 2022, three (3) coups detat and one (1) attempted coup took place in the West Africa region. Consequently, the aforementioned African nations faced suspension from both the AU and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) due to their involvement in UCG, which represents a reversal of the Agenda 2063 flagship initiative of 'Silencing the Guns' as a core indicator of ensuring Africa is peaceful.
