dc.description.abstract The Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE) is part of a Longitudinal Survey Programme in WHO's Multi-Country Studies unit. The main SAGE surveys compile comparable longitudinal information on the health and well-being of adult populations and the ageing process from nationally representative samples in six countries (China, Ghana, India, Mexico, Russian Federation and South Africa). Financial support for SAGE was provided by the US National Institute on Aging and the World Health Organization. The South African Government also provided financial support for SAGE South Africa Wave 1. Each country's national report is a descriptive summary of results, including this report of SAGE Wave 1. Wave 2 will be implemented in 2012/13 and Wave 3 in 2014/15. This report provides an overview of the first survey results. It will be used for dissemination purposes and to plan further in-depth analyses of the data for publication in academic journals. en
