Abstract:
South African cities perform a vital role inn underpinning all-round national development, despite their internal problems. Stronger economic growth in urban areas over the last decade has effectively funded the large-scale expansion of social programmes in rural areas. We seem unable to envisage a national territory that is becoming increasingly integrated, and in which different parts of the country perform different roles and functions.
