Abstract:
The overall objective of this project is to measure the impact of the South African learnership and apprenticeship systems as they support employed and unemployed learners in the acquisition of skills to enter employment. The research investigates the extent to which the learnership and apprenticeship pathway systems develop the right numbers, levels and kinds of basic, intermediate and high-level skills and capabilities required by firms across diverse sectors. The three main research questions are: What is the scale and kind of skills the learnership and apprenticeship pathway systems produce? What are the different learnership and apprenticeship pathways in the transition to employment? To what extent do the learnership and apprenticeship pathway systems build the kinds of skills and capabilities that equip young people for the workplace and enhance the transition to employment?
