Abstract:
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the remarkable process of change in South Africa, launched by Nelson Mandela's release from prison. In winning freedom and democracy for all in the early 1990s, popular hopes were raised of a far-reaching transformation in socio-economic conditions. South Africa under Mandela stood out as a global beacon for the progressive values of national unity and social justice.
