dc.description.abstract This article is based on data collected in 2002-03. Quantitative evidence was based on data gathered in a pre-registration exercise conducted by the Department of Education and followed up by qualitative case studies conducted at a number of provider sites nationally. The article begins with an assessment of the South African economic developmental context. This is followed by a brief assessment of provision patterns of the private TVETsector. Using an alternative typological categorisation, and notions of responsiveness and receptivesness, it examines features of provision suited for the post-school learner in attempts to access the labour market. en
