Abstract:
The unexpected postelection violence in Kenya has again highlighted the need for a clearer understanding of the relationship between identity and violent conflict in Africa. In a study of nine African countries the interdependence of identity, political power struggles and rivalry for access to resources was found to be an important factor in such conflicts. GERARD HAGG reports on the findings of this study.
