Evaluation of the impact of the life orientation programme on HIV/AIDS in Gauteng schools: pilot study

Abstract

The primary aim of this pilot research was to develop an instrument to evaluate the impact of the Life Orientation Programme (LOP) on sex, sexuality and HIV/AIDS in Gauteng schools at secondary level and if possible at primary level. The main objectives were to 1. Determine levels of implementation of life orientation and HIV/AIDS awareness activities in schools 2. Identify and compare sources of information on HIV/AIDS and their perceived impact particularly the roles of schools, the life orientation programme and educators 3. Measure knowledge of HIV/AIDS (transmission, prevention, treatment, and other knowledge about the disease) 4. Determine intended protective behaviours and the ability to carry out protective behaviours 5. Measure attitudes: levels of stigma and gender equality in sexual relationships 6. The aim of the pilot was to measure impact at junior secondary level, Grades 8 and 9, but also to see whether the instrument would be suitable to measure impact in grades 6 and 7.
