Abstract:
Tourism is the sole topic of this chapter, which has four sections. The first shows how travel and tourism have evolved and how a 'new' tourism has emerged in response to the radically altered global economy of ht last 20 years. The second describes the atypical experience of South Africa as a tourism destination and examine some recent local tourism initiatives. The third examine with recourse to two case studies some issues emerging from the eco and cultural attraction that dominate South African tourism. The fourth discuss the problems and prospects for tourism development in South Africa associated with the country's late entry into the global tourism market place during a period of local political and social transition.
