Abstract:
The provision of good quality education in public sector schools in South Africa is intrinsically linked to the health,
wellbeing and productivity of educators employed in this sector. The National Department of Basic Education (DBE) commissioned the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) to conduct a second national survey to assess the health and wellbeing of public school based educators in South Africa. The goals of the study were to investigate the HIV-related epidemiological profile of educators and school leadership (Principals, Vice Principals and Heads of Departments) in the public education sector and to assess the impact of HIV prevention, care and treatment programs on HIV prevalence. The findings contribute towards strengthening employee related programmes.
