Abstract:
Questions of the symbolic importance of Fort Hare and Alice, and the university's educational mission and direction as an institution need to be more clearly separated if Fort Hare is to make a more meaningful contribution to the development of the region. The city, in particular, needs to challenge the university to play a more meaningful role in urban development.
