Abstract:
South Africa’s higher education sector has the largest R&D workforce in the country a little under two-thirds of all R&D personnel giving it a leading role in science, technology and innovation (STI) activities and skills development. In 2021/22, higher education was responsible for most of the R&D activity in the country (as it has been since 2019). The social sciences were the main field of research in higher education in 2021/22.
