Abstract:
This chapter reflects on the state of South Africa’s food systems, highlighting disparities and inefficiencies; explores the impact of the non-functioning food system on the country’s population, particularly marginalised and vulnerable groups; and discusses and underscores the importance of supporting policy reforms by addressing environmental challenges and food waste, leveraging technology and innovations, and promoting urban agriculture as potential strategies to transform sustainable food systems in South Africa.
