Abstract:

South Africa’s higher education sector plays a crucial role in the country’s innovation system through R&D that improves the calibre and applicability of teaching and research within academic institutions. Higher education institutions accounted for 36.4% of all R&D expenditure in 2022/23 which was focused around advancing knowledge and economic development.
