Abstract:
This chapter examines an attempt to develop a 'new mine worker' for a new workplace culture in a South African gold mine. The chapter suggests that there are two ways of thinking about relationship between work and training. The chapter concludes by arguing that any training designed to develop a new miner must be based on the recognition and elaboration of these tacit skills and the systematic articulation of the existing occupational culture.
